There is a certain mystery surrounding the origins of the Adirondack chair. The name comes from the rugged Adirondack mountains of New York State, but the chair itself may have its roots in an idea credited to one Thomas Lee who in 1903, searching for an alternative to the uncomfortable Victorian-style chair, developed a design which became known as the Westport chair.
Made from eleven pieces of wood cut from a single board with a straight back and seat it soon became very popular for its simple beauty and amazing comfort. Since that time what became known as the Adirondack chair has gone through many adaptations but it is the raked seat and back together with the wide armrests, all features of the original Westport, that are now considered hallmarks of the true Adirondack. Nowadays it is known all over the United States and beyond.
Here in France, we believe there is a gap in the market for a well-designed high quality garden/conservatory chair at a reasonable price. Our chairs are made from local oak - we are lucky enough to live near the Foret de Troncais in Northern Auvergne, which produces some of the best oak in France for furniture making.
The chair, ergonomically designed for comfort and support, is both eye-catching and durable. Sporting a grand total of 38 pieces of wood (!), it features a curved and rounded back and a contoured seat that is truly a joy to sit in without the need for extra padding or cushions. And, of course, the wide level armrests are ideal for setting food or drinks on. Don't forget that with their elegant simplicity and fine workmanship these chairs are equally at home in a conservatory - the perfect present for a special occasion and one that will give pleasure for many years.
The chair is supplied without a finish and can be left to go a lovely silvery grey which will blend with any garden setting. All that is required is an annual wash with a brush and soapy water. Should you wish to conserve the natural honey colour of the oak the timber should first be treated with preservative and then oiled.
